Shevid drying down on a tarp
An abandoned seed head
Growing and Seed Harvesting Instructions
When plants are mostly dry, we harvest whole plants and let them dry out on a tarp before crushing them by stepping on them and collecting the seed. Those who are more careful in their seed saving might harvest individual umbels and gently break off the seeds; this technique results in fewer broken stems in the mix, which makes the job of winnowing easier.
This variety produces some seed heads that it doesn’t fully invest in. I mean that not all of the seed heads have plump and big seeds that I would confidently plant; some are shriveled and die off without producing seeds. So, fret not if the seeds aren’t all fully formed, just take enough big ones for next year!Plant these beans in the Spring when the threat of frost has passed. They are bush beans and don’t require trellising. Expect these plants to get a couple feet tall, and to be very well behaved and orderly. The dry beans will be ready at the end of the summer. Harvest the pods when they are brown and dry, and thresh and winnow like normal to separate the seeds from the pods.
