Samanoo: A Tradition of Abundance and Mutual Aid
Saturday, March 14th, 4:30-PM-7:30PM
Location: North Oakland, specific location will be sent to ticket holders.
Join us for a presentation about an ancient food from West and Central Asia called Samanoo, its spiritual significance, and the ways it built community for millennia!
We are in awe of the ways that this ancient tradition creates an embodied sense of belonging, gratitude, and connection, and wanted to share its ability to strengthen bonds with you. This presentation will teach us how we can adopt principles from the spiritual practices embedded in Samanoo production, Nazr and Barekat, for community organizing. In today’s society where many people feel rootless and disconnected, we hope our liberation work will benefit from this ancient tradition.
During this presentation, we will also wrap up the week-long process of cooking and preparing samanoo and distribute it amongst participants. You’ll get to help make the samanoo in our communal pot and learn about how it’s made.
Bring a jar to take home 6oz of Samanoo for your haft-sin. The wheat berries are local and organic, grown by Pie Ranch. We will have a rare opportunity to taste real samanoo for Iftar!
The event will be filmed for a documentary. There will be release forms for attendees to sign at the start of the event. If you wish to not be recorded, please let the crew know.
This event is a labor of love. We are offering this programming on a sliding scale because we want to make it accessible to our community. The higher end of the sliding scale helps us to sustain ourselves and continue our work. The price of the ticket includes 6oz of samanoo (bring a jar!). Space is limited. Please buy your tickets ASAP.
Prices include processing fees.
Accessibility: Attendees are strongly encouraged to wear masks, except when eating. The event is indoors and outdoors. The indoor segment is on the ground floor, but there is a small step to get through the doorframe. We are not planning on providing transcription, but if that makes this event inaccessible for you, please let us know and we will try to find a way.
